Hello again, it's me as usual :P
I'd like to hear what you guys are thinking about the newly elected US president and his endeavours.
Being the first black president in The White House, can his governing policies really make a change as he claims they will?
I think he looks promising, and somewhat he looks like no other US president I've seen. He has emergency plans and full-support of the society. I've seen him on Jay Leno show, he does have a sense of humor I can tell. He shows no hostility towards Iran, unlike the previous government. He airs a video in which he's reciting a poem from a Persian poet and reconciles. Amazing!
The thing I am interested in is that whether he will succeed at solving this middle-east and Iraq mess, or not. That concerns my part.

An excellent topic with some really thought-provoking questions, Mete, and I am also very keen to know what you all think!
ReplyDeleteHe definitely needs more than five years to see some results. His views on foreign policy foresee a much more stable army with a dream of real peace (not the type of democracy in Iraq) rather than a global invasion force. Also, the islam relation by the family could relax the extreme religious fanatics in both middle-east (iran, iraq) and pakistan and create such sympathy within the muslims that many people who think USA is all against, with biased thoughts of course, muslims. I also watched him in Colbert Report where he connects to the studio by the screen which Hillary Clinton fixes and says: I'm sure she'll be happy to fix the screen. (During campaign, they both participate the program at the same episode.)
ReplyDeleteAlso, i wonder how he will convince the bosses of fire-arm producers after leaving Iraq, because their profit will be reduced by any means of peace and Obama's foreign policy promises long term peace. There was news that states the possibility of moving the army to Pakistan, because during the recent instability in politics when Benazir Bhutto was assassinated, possession of nuclear arms by extreme religious fanatics were possible. This could be a proper reason for USA to `stabilize` the area, if the government is in the same boat with previous one (Although it doesn't seem to be). I hope possession of nukes or invasion on Pakistan never come true.
ReplyDeleteYou've some remarkable points there Mert.
ReplyDeleteSome critics point out that Obama is the beginning of the change, but aren't all presidents promise what voters expect? (presumably, this one is one of the most major change). It's like a cause-effect relation: If an individual foresees and acts basing on what others desire, it encompasses the hardness of the path to the top (presidency), right? I'm not saying that Obama's presidency will be usual; but Americans shouldn't drift themselves on Obama. So, be prepared for any cases.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you're the only one contributing in this topic. So Mert, what's your opinion about the ongoing war in Iraq?
ReplyDeleteThere is a famous quote that explicitly explains my ideas on the subject: "Fighting for peace is like fucking for virginity."
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, politicians are not convincing. However Obama seems like more convincing than other. I think Mert is right about that we should wait like five years to understand him and his policies. In second issue, about Iraq; He said that we are going to walk out from Iraq, however Iraq is already destroyed. So when they will move away from Iraq it is like Iraq get back their honor.
ReplyDeleteI have to completely agree with Mert's observations on this topic - a pithy quote indeed!
ReplyDeleteIt is a huge oxymoron, isn't it?
Mert, I'm simply amazed by your comment. Such an accurate quotation!
ReplyDeleteSonja it is indeed a huge oxymoron, what a contradiction!
Keep up the good work guys! Keep posting!
Have you read the news? Obama will also be meeting with the opposition party leaders; rather than only RTE. He considers every possible political view available and it's a good evidance of his multi-dimensional approach on solutions.
ReplyDeleteI just watched news, they were talking about security in Istanbul because of Obama's visit. There is a woman who said that if Erdoğan go ABD are they make this kind of security control. I don't understand people in Turkey how can they think that Obama and Erdoğan are equal. Maybe it is not related with this topic but i want to share it. :)
ReplyDeletehahaha, that's quite a good point, Ekin. Obama is practically the 'world's president': Erdogan is certainly not! :-D
ReplyDeleteYou're missing the point there Sonja. Mr Prime minister is the president of our hearts and minds. :)
ReplyDeleteYou're wrong people. Mr Prime Minister is the president of high altitude sheeps (guided by very little grass) and wind followers. (Seriously, who else would give vote, as a proof of satisfaction, by receiving a washing machine where no water pipes exist?)
ReplyDeleteC'mon Mert, if you were to donate a 3000$ worth computer hardware to me, I would happily vote for you :D
ReplyDeleteIf mert donate same thing to me a said i will vote for you but i don't..=) I know that there are lots of people need this donation but poeple secretly voting. Anyhow in Turkey votes did not decide who win because there is always some fraud.
ReplyDeleteDo you remember the Daily Mirror's cover when Bush was elected second time. The heading was "How can 59054087 people be so DUMB?". It is like today's Turkey. ((:
ReplyDeleteIt seems everybody thinks I'm capable of donating thousands of dollars and it's definitely good to be at the same phrase with three thousand dollars:) If such amount makes you happy, i can truly invest on you guys (i now feel like bourgeois of the blog). Seriously, what i mean about the voting thing is that RTE is mincing the phrase "Köylü milletin efendisidir" but doesn't he devalue them as he assumes their vote will be so easy by buying them out something? Another case: He "invests" education in villages by constructing schools, maintaining heat in classes and sending course books but when it's asked a teacher to guide with appropriate qualification, he does nothing. (Consider, a lot of schools in far villages experience lack of teacher.).
ReplyDeleteI mean would you vote for me if i donate you a dinner or some kind, Ekin? (A joke i always wanted to say.) By saying fraud, you refer the burning of votes in istanbul and death threads to voters in South-Easter region, right? The thing i like in Obama is that there hasn't been a major unethical political conflict (the one in Turkey) in his selection campaign, right? One day, may one of the changes he made shall be to be an idol for all our party leaders in sense of teaching how to make proper campaign speeches. (Relating back to blog)
ReplyDeleteI know that in in that school there are lots of people who do not know about how people in East Turkey live? In what conditions?.. If they blame this people because of they are voting exchange of money they must go there and look them. If people want that (only that one) fraud will disappear, they must work for these people and educate them. (it seems a little unrelated to topic)
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's unrelated at all, Ekin, it's a very pertinent point and I wish more people could see beyond their prejudice and stop blaming all of Turkey's problems on "people in the East"(such a stereotype anyway). It's easy when you're economically comfortable and well-educated to criticise people who may not be.
ReplyDeleteIt’s not east’s fault to be in such condition. What is the problem with "people in the East"? It has been the collection of governmental problems from 60’s to recent date. How have terrorists in south-eastern part gotten skilled with weapons and strategic hold of the land? The military interventions of 70s and 80s, as the availability of books about mines and hand-constructible weapons were much more than ever, forming the capability of individuals, who weren’t terrorists back then but holding opposite ideas, possessing harmful tools. When terrorism become a major issue: introduction of GAP, because an economical development of the whole region would conflict with the long-term desire of outer authorities and such developments would strength the loyalty of citizens to the Republic of Turkey. Look at “the East”: Do you see any proper investment that will make them to be loyal to the government as the citizens in west are loyal? I barely see that! (I’ll list the proofs of investment lack later on). That's why our government should shift the tax distribution from military expenses to the construction of GAP, a major improvement in social-infrastructure, so that prevention of unemployment, migration to west with no productive skills, and becoming of militias could be prevented, right? If the domestic satisfaction had been well, why would citizens would have decided to rebel against the authority? I think, bombing the south-eastern mountains for possible terrorist penetration isn’t enough to stop the current crisis, right? (TSK’s struggles to convince the families of terrorists whom children left home to join PKK is a great example.)
